SOCIAL CONTROL

SOCIAL CONTROL:

  • Social control is the way in which society regulates the behavior of its individual members. It can be defined as a way in which society Social control is the attempt to control human behavior. Social control is defined by various authors.

According to Ogburn and Nimkoff :

  • Social control is the pattern of pressure by which a society attempts to maintain order and rules of conduct.

ACCORDING TO LANDIS

  • According to Landis, social control is a social process by which social organization is created and maintained.
  • From the above definition, it can be concluded that social control is an influence that is used by society to promote the welfare of the group as a whole.

IMPORTANT OF SOCIAL CONTROL :

  • Social control is necessary for the existence of society.

SYMBOLIC DEVICE:

law :

  • Laws are rules enforced by a legal agency.

Education :

Education is a way through which wrong beliefs are corrected and preconceived notions are removed. Education is a way through which the right kind of social attitudes can be created.

coercion :

  • Social control achieved through the use of force is a negative means of social control.
  • Coercion takes the form of physical injury, imprisonment, and death.
  • Other forms of coercion, such as nonviolent coercion, include strikes, boycotts, and civil disobedience.

Beliefs:

  • Beliefs control a person from doing wrong things.
  • These people believe in invisible powers.
  • So people try to take the right steps because they believe that they are being watched by an invisible power.
  • People also believe that by doing wrong or sins they will go to hell after death and by doing right deeds and good deeds they will go to heaven after death.
  • All these beliefs lead man to such activities that disturb the social institution. This means that beliefs control man and lead him to activities that are appropriate according to society.

  • Advice influences the social life of a person. Advice should be given by taking the example of any literature, book, journal, and newspaper etc.

ideologies :

  • Ideologies affect human life and guide man towards the right path.

 folk ways and mores:

  • Folkmargs are socially accepted and it is not easy to violate folkmargs.
  • If a person violates folkmargs, they are ostracized by the members.
  • The fear of being isolated from society leads individuals to behave in controlled ways.

custom and religion:

Customs and religion are passed down from generation to generation and continue for a very long time. Religion is an attitude towards a superhuman power.
